The Cataraqui Cemetery Company  -  A Long and Proud History

Incorporated on August 10, 1850 by an Act of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada, The Cataraqui Cemetery Company was established as a not for profit corporation to provide the greater Kingston area with an alternative concept to the small, overused, sectarian and denominational inner city cemeteries of the time. Since our founding we remain a cemetery  that is held in perpetual trust for the cemetery's patrons (our members) who have and will acquire interment rights (burial plots).

Families reliy on Cataraqui Cemetery to provide interment options in what has become the area's most scenic and exceptionally landscaped cemetery. The name Cataraqui Cemetery and Funeral Services is a registered trade name that is  used today simply to better convey our emerging role as a leader that offers both cemetery and funeral services.   Families and the community are assured that our not-for-profit intentions remain unchanged.  We have simply added more bereavement related conveniences in order to better serve the needs of our community, our interment rights holders and our compelling commitment for the perpetual care of the cemetery.

The Cataraqui Cemetery Company Board of Trustees are the stewards of the historic cemetery and not-for-profit corporation.  Together with a professional full time team of managers and staff, the volunteer Board of Trustees ensures the Interment Rights Holders that all the revenue generated from the Cemetery's various trust funds, charitable gifts, products and services are directed back into the cemetery exclusively for its care, maintenance, operation, and administration… all in keeping with the Cemetery's not for profit objectives established in 1850.

Recognizing the rich civic and cultural history that the cemetery holds, The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada has designated Cataraqui Cemetery as a National Historic Site of Canada.  Additionally, the Cemetery has been designated by the City of Kingston, under the Ontario Heritage Act.  These designations, in combination with our continued contributions and diligent management of the cemetery's maintenance trust fund, will ensure the Interment Rights Holders and our civic stakeholders that the cemetery will remain responsibly maintained and conserved in perpetuity.
