The Cataraqui Cemetery - A Long and Proud History

Serving Families Since 1850

Families have a long history of counting on Cataraqui Cemetery for the reliable, responsible and respectful care of their interment sites. As we continue our tradition of serving families in need, we hold true to our mission of caring for families with the respect and dignity they deserve by offering quality burial options, cremation services and commemoration products.

Incorporated on August 10, 1850 by an Act of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada, Cataraqui Cemetery was established to provide the greater Kingston area with a new and alternative concept to the small and crowded denominational cemeteries of the time. Today, our historic past shines as we continue to evolve and meet the current demands and trends of the public we serve. Since our incorporation, Cataraqui Cemetery has been held in perpetual trust for the patrons who have and continue to acquire interment rights. Operating as Kingston's only non-denominational, not for profit, public, rural reform, garden cemetery, Cataraqui Cemetery is unlike most church yards, profit focused cemeteries or municipal cemeteries.

The needs of Cataraqui Cemetery are administered, on behalf of the Interment Rights Holders, by The Cataraqui Cemetery's Board of Trustees as well as a professional full time staff and assistance from dedicated volunteers. Together, they ensure that all the revenue generated from the Cemetery's trust funds, donations, endowments, products and services are invested back into the responsible management, administration, maintenance, operation, and upkeep of the Cemetery and the onsite crematorium.

Cataraqui Cemetery has been operating since before Confederation - over 160 years.
Located in Cataraqui Village, now part of the ever expanding city of Kingston Ontario, Cataraqui Cemetery serves the greater Kingston area and families from across Ontario, Canada and the world. The Cemetery is available to anyone even if they are not a resident of the City of Kingston.
Cataraqui Cemetery continues to offer ample space for future interments even with over 46,000 interments inside our historic gates.
The Cataraqui Cemetery Board of Trustees is responsible for the care and maintenance of over 90 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, water features and mature trees. The Cemetery is nationally recognized and an award winning garden cemetery.
We operate a full time office with professional staff so that families will find that we are available to assist them with their at-need requirements or to help with the pre-planning of their Cemetery arrangements.
Cataraqui Cemetery is open and operates year round.

At-Need Arrangements

Families will find that Cataraqui Cemetery's helpful and accommodating professional staff are available at a moments notice to assist with all the necessary cemetery services and arrangements. We are available for consultations during our regular business hours through-out the week and we are on-call during evenings and weekends for families to contact us regarding interment services.

Pre-Planning

Not only can families pre-select an ideal interment location within our Cemetery, they have the opportunity to pre-plan by arranging in advance any cemetery services and memorialization. Our services are ranging. For those that have cremation in mind, they may pre-arrange the services of Cataraqui Cemetery's crematorium and even choose from our offering of urns and keepsakes. Operating on site, Cataraqui Cemetery's crematorium has been trusted by Kingston area funeral homes and families for over 30 years. We have built a reputation based on trust and dependability. Cataraqui Cemetery crematorium services can be pre-arranged in advance - even if you have not selected our cemetery for interment.
