City By-Law Amendment
The Cataraqui Cemetery is asking for the public to demonstrate support in preventing a proposed re-zoning amendment to Kingston By-Law 76-26. City Council's approval of the re-zoning amendment would allow for the construction of a high density development on property immediately adjacent to the Cemetery that is viewed as environmentally sensitive and that is of significant cultural heritage interest to Kingston, the Province and Canada. The re-zoning of the property that is along the entire length of the historic Cemetery's east border would be subject to the destruction of a nationally recognized historical rural landscape only to be replaced by 6 high density apartment buildings that are proposed to be 18-20 stories in height as well as their respective parking lots. By voicing your concerns in letters to Kingston City Council, the Mayor and City Planners, you will help support the historic, not for profit, public cemetery with regards to this supersensitive issue. The proposed By-Law amendment will undermine the significant elements that make Cataraqui Cemetery a National Historic Site of Canada. The rich cultural heritage of the 210 year old rural/garden cemetery is at risk. If you would like more information, please contact us.
