Designated as a National Historic Site of Canada

Kingston and area can be proud.

The Cataraqui Cemetery has officially received designation as a National Historic Site of Canada as a result of the efforts of many people. Cataraqui Cemetery is proud to receive the honour and recognition. As one of the first of its kind in Canada, Cataraqui Cemetery is recognized as an excellent example of a medium sized rural (garden) cemetery. Designated because of a naturalistic landscape that incorporates Picturesque perspectives and Romantic elements.  The Cemetery's collection of funeral monuments and statues are of artistic and historical interest. They are an exceptional illustration of many aspects of the cultural heritage and rich history of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Kingston.  Designation also pays homage to the many prominent Canadians, including Canada's first Prime Minister, and the 46,000 + individuals and families interred with the Cemetery's historic gates.  The Hon. Peter Kent and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada have agreed with what many in Kingston have always believed.  Cataraqui Cemetery is a special and treasured place deserving of national recognition.
