Cremation Interment Options

Cremation Interment/Placement Options

At Cataraqui Cemetery, we are aware of the emerging popularity of cremation.  Our strong commitment to serving our community means we are continuously offering new and varying options of cremation interment.  In-ground urn interments may be placed within one of our unique cremation gardens, cremation lots, a family grave or at the base of one of our many tree programs.  Families additionally have the choice of placing urns within one of many private or communal columbaria thaqt are located throughout the cemetery.  All of our options are available for families with an immediate need or for families who see the benefit in pre-selecting.

Private or Community Gardens

In keeping with our historic garden cemetery concept of the late 1800's, cremation gardens have become our signature interment option at Cataraqui Cemetery.  By offering a living memorial to the memory of a loved one, our award winning gardens have become a popular and sought after choice for the interment of cremations.  Interment rights for an in-ground urn interment are available for private or community (shared) gardens.  Families will be assisted by a Family Services Representative in selecting the most appropriate garden choice from our many garden varieties, sizes and memorialization options.  Our horticulturalist is on staff year round for consultation and to ensure that the gardens are well kept.  Families interested in our private gardens may choose one of our pre-landscaped award winning gardens or seek our consultation for personal plant selection.  Interment rights for our gardens vary depending on the garden size, location and recommended memorialization.  Please contact us to learn more about purchasing interment rights within our gardens.

 Private or Community Columbaria

Columbaria, plural of columbarium, have become a popular option at Cataraqui Cemetery over the past couple of decades.  Due to the growing request for more options, we have listened and expanded our offering.  The public may now choose from some of the most unique and elegant styles available in the Kingston area.  In general, Columbaria are permanent granite structures of varying shapes, colours and sizes that are subdivided into compartments or niches for the purpose of permanently housing one or two urns.  Columbaria have become focal and attractive above ground features.  Niches are available within community and smaller private family columbarium.   Some columbaria and niches allow for more than two urns.  With an added opportunity to have the niche panels or a private columbarium inscribed, Columbaria are appealing options.  Please contact us for more information regarding our wide selection.  We are now booking for our newest columbaria in the Gardens of Nicaea.

Tree Programs

Throughout the rolling landscape of Cataraqui Cemetery, we have established a number of "special" trees.  These selected trees have been prepared to accommodate a single marker at the base and single or multiple cremation interments.  As an inspiring and breathtaking living memorial, the tree will be cared for by the Cemetery for perpetuity.   In addition to our interment tree programs, we offer non-interment memorial tree programs.

A note about our trees.  Many of the trees on our grounds are  part of our landscape and are not reserved for interment options. Some of the mature trees pre-date Confederation and the 1850 incorporation of Cataraqui Cemetery.  They are part of a landscape that predates our Cemetery and the urban growth of the Kingston area.  The care of our precious trees has become an ongoing process. We care for damaged or mature trees and re-plant the ones we have lost.  To ensure a healthy tree population, over the years we have planted and cared for a diversified mix of native and non native tree species.  Some of the unique varieties found at Cataraqui Cemetery include Camperdown Elm, Blue Beech, Gingko, White Hydrangea and White Flowering Red Bud to name just a few.  With such a large and special inventory of trees for our staff to care for, we rely on generous donations, fundraising events and the efforts of volunteers.

Cremation Plots

Cremation plots are intended for cremation burials only and are offered in limited sections of the Cemetery.  Varying with the section and the landscape that has been developed, cremation plots are typically smaller than a traditional grave and memorialized with a variety of flat marker styles.  Our newest section, Gardens of Nicaea, was designed to allow for a number of family cremation plots along an interlocking brick pathway.  In this feature section, each cremation plot is memorialized with a red or black marker stylized as a detailed open book.  Families find value in cremation plots as they most often include a marker.  By contacting the Cemetery, one of our knowledgeable Family Services Representatives will be happy to assist you with more information.
