Our Cemetery Sections
Many Cemetery Sections to Choose From
Cataraqui Cemetery has expanded to its current size of nearly 90 acres. The sections that were laid out and conceptualized as part of the original cemetery design are referred to as "Old" sections. These sections, for the most part, were the first offered to the public starting in 1850 and after 160 years, we can still offer new sites to families. The 1950's saw the expansion and development of many of the "New" sections. Particularly those visible and easily accessible from our second entrance off of Sydenham Rd. Our newest section, The Gardens of Nicaea, opened in the fall of 2009 and is only a short distance from our original and historic front gates off of Purdy's Mill Rd. Forest Pond, a revitalized water area with fountains and a landscaped creek, continues to be a popular and picturesque location within the heart of the Cemetery that offers many varying interment options.
"Old" Sections
Many of the "old" sections of Cataraqui Cemetery date from 1850-1890’s. Some even pre-date the historic Incorporation of The Cataraqui Cemetery. Originally sold as full, half or quarter plots, many of the most historic and artistic monuments can be found within these sections. Numerous single, double or family plots remain available for families or individuals who are attracted to the old style charm of these sections. For those that are interested, we may even be able to find a single grave or two that are available for purchase beside or nearby the family plot of past generations of family members. Contact us for more details or to learn more about the "Old" sections or family plots.
"New" Sections
Cataraqui Cemetery's "New" sections can be found closer to our Sydenham Rd. entrance (back gates). These sections were developed in the 1950’s and reflect the changes in burial practices and social conditions of the times. With over 60 years of burials, these sections are well developed and the trees now show their maturity in being able to provide shade and cover. Families can reserve their burials site by selecting from a large number of options in these sections. There are plenty of single, double and family plots. For more information or answers to your questions regarding the "New" sections, please contact us. We are glad to help.
DVA/Military
Sometimes known as the Field of Honour, this special section at Cataraqui Cemetery is unique among cemeteries. We at Cataraqui Cemetery are privileged and honoured to care for this section. Reserved for persons that have served in the military, this section is easily recognizable due to it's uniform concentration of similar styled military monuments and the Cross of Sacrifice center piece. Presented as a final resting place of soldiers who had served Canada and the Commonwealth during conflicts and wars including the Northwest Rebellion and the Crimean war. If you or some you know has served in a time of peace or are the spouse of a soldier please contact us to learn more about reserving a special place in this section.

Featured in this section are the cremation interment options along the interlocking brick pathway that leads to our most impressive communal columbarium. Chapel Hill
Once you have entered through our historic front gate off of Purdy's Mill Rd., your eye will be immediately drawn to a central hillock. Ringed by numerous memorial trees, Chapel Hill stands as another picturesque option at Cataraqui Cemetery. Nestled among the mature trees, and crested upon the hill is a covered outdoor chapel which houses the “Altar of Life”, an elegant community columbarium. Just a few steps from the open air chapel are many other private and community columbaria options. Started as part of the Cemetery's 150th Anniversary project, Chapel Hill brings together many elements that make Cataraqui Cemetery unique.
