Established in the early 19th century as a village burial ground, developed as a rural garden cemetery and became the final resting place of 41,000 men & women of all walks of life including noted civic leaders, academics, authors, inventors & explorers.   The SUPERINTENDENT'S COTTAGE was built by William Massie in 1854 for £214.This Gothic cottage with teardrop ornaments on the verge board was designed by James Stewart, a Kingston architect for £25.The original board and batten siding was replaced in 1907 with the  present siding. Other alterations included the addition of the two bay windows with the front porch in 1887 and the eastern wing in 1900. The interior has been extensively altered several times. The CEMETERY OFFICES and CREMATORIA:The current Cemetery offices and crematoria were built in 1980 and renovated in 2006. THE QUAKER BURIAL GROUND: This area was used by Quakers in  the Kingston area from 1801 until the turn of the century. Since the Cemetery Company took over this section in 1907 it has been  redivided and reused so it is no longer exclusively a Quaker section. Sir ALEXANDER CAMPBELL (1822-1892)  He was a Father of Confederation, a lieutenant-govenor of Ontario  (1887-1892,  a senator (1867-1887), and was a Cabinet minister in Sir John A. Macdonald's government. In addition,he was dean of Queen's University faculty of law, president of the Intercolonial Express Co, chairman of the Consolidated Bank, Toronto Branch, and vice-president of Isolated Risk Fire Insurance Co. As a young student, he articled under Sir John A. Macdonald. Sir Alex was particularly noted for being a mediator when there were internal Conservative party disputes in Ontario. He was also the  first chairman of the board of the Cataraqui Cemetery Company. Sir JOHN ALEXANDER MACDONALD (1815-1891) He was Canada's foremost Father of Confederation and her first Prime Minister. Also buried in this plot are Sir John's father (Hugh), mother (Helen Shaw), first wife (Isabella Clark), infant son (John Alexander), sister (Margaret), brother-in-law(Dr.James Williamson) and sister(Louisa). The MILITARY PLOT was deeded to the War Department in 1865.  Soldiers who died in the Kingston area from 1865 to the present,  mainly in training accidents or through sickness, are buried here. This plot is now administrated by the Department of Veteran  Affairs. JOHN COUNTER (1799-1862)  He was mayor eight times between 1841 and  1855, and the first mayor of the city of Kingston in 1846. While in office, he negotiated a £20,000 loan in England to build Kingston City Hall in the 1840's. In addition, he was involved in numerous business ventures. For example, he was a partner in the Penny Bridge across the Cataraqui River, a director of the Bank of British North America, a shareholder in the Calvin Co. of Garden Island and owner of the Marine Railway and the Shipway and Shipyard. John Counter overextended himself financially and as a result was forced into bankruptcy in 1855. He died in virtual obscurity seven years later. Dr. JAMES SAMPSON (1789-1861) was the founder of Kingston General Hospital and the hospital's first Chairman of the Board of Governors (1857). He was also a founder of Queen's University and president of the medical faculty (1854-1860). Although he was a mayor of Kingston (1839, 1840 and 1844, he had little interest in politics but an absorbing interest in the welfare of the poor and oppressed in the improvement of medical training. He was consulting surgeon to governors-general Sydenham (Thompson), Charles Bagot, and Charles Metcalfe from 1841 to 1844 when Kingston was the capital of united Canada.
